Proclaim through Witness and Words

Here are some thoughts from Scott Hahn’s book titled “Evangelizing Catholics”  that you might find helpful in becoming a more effective evangelist.

St. Francis advice to”Preach the Gospel always, when necessary use words.”is often the guide people use to be a witness to their faith today. This is how they believe they are evangelizing those around them.

But words matter too.  The reason they are essential is because none of us are so truly  and clearly living the Good News  that the witness of our lives is sufficient for bringing people to faith.

The Church stresses the importance of looking for opportunities to announce Christ’s words to non believers and believers with the view of leading them to the faith. The words of St. Paul should echo in our hearts, “Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel”.

Also, the Church states that Catholics are “strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed”. She says the work belongs to the laity,as much as it does the priests and religious. The New Evangelization is a task for the whole church because priest and religious cannot go where we, the laity , can go, they cannot reach the people we can reach.

The New Evangelization calls us not just to transform individuals but the entire culture. The culture has turned toxic and the gap between how the Church tells us to live and how the culture tells us to live has grown so wide we can no longer bridge it. Just as the de-Christianization  of culture today has led many men and women way from the Church,so can the re-Christianization of culture lead men and women back to the Church.

That’s what we are doing when we share our faith, through both our silent and spoken witness, with people in our homes, neighborhoods, communities.schools and workplaces.

Lent is a good time to ask ourselves “How can I become a better Evangelist.?
